Wordless Wednesday: The HTC One S edition

standard May 29, 2012 4 responses

I, like every other blogging mom on the planet, lug around a huge purse. It contains all my mommy stuff and a bunch of bloggy stuff like a notebook, pens, and a camera as well as my phone and all the cords and accessories I might need while I’m out and about.

This week, thanks to my awesome husband, I lightened the load a bit.

I got a new phone.

You’d think that would just trade one load for another, but the camera on this phone is so much better than any point-and-shoot camera I have ever owned that I can finally take my camera and its accessories out of my purse. I can also stop lamenting the fact that I can never remember where I left the camcorder.

This weekend we took a hike and I gave the HTC One S’s camera a whirl.

Such little girls in front of such a big world.
The beauty of where we live never ceases to amaze me.
That is not a puppy. It is a baby lamb. The girls were fans.
Yes, that is a panoramic shot of the view. Yes, I took it with my phone. Yes, it is awesome.

I have a feeling there will be a noticeable increase in photos taken in the next few months…

Happy Birthday America

We celebrated just right…

Fun on the beach. Sunburn for mommy included.
And staying up way past our bedtime…
to see fireworks in the distance.
Hope your 4th was memorable.
What are you doing with all your freedom?

Milestone Photos: First Steps

I have a confession to make. I missed my second daughter’s first steps.

I was in the house with her. It was a sunny weekend afternoon. I fact, I was very focused on her seeing as I was running around making cupcakes and doing last second prep for her first birthday party. But I wasn’t actually focused on her.

If we’re being brutally honest, when she took that momentous first step, while frosting said cupcakes, I was on the phone with a really old friend who I hadn’t talked to in years and who clearly really needed to talk. So, when M called to me from the living room, I might have said something like:

“Yeah, yeah. Great. I’ll catch her next first steps.” Cruel mommy that I am!

But come on, we all know how it is. Kids do something for the “first” time, then they don’t do it again for weeks and they do it all over again.

Little L, true to form, didn’t take any more “first steps” until we went to Lake Tahoe with the family a few weeks later.

That time, as though to prove the point that I should really have put down the phone and run over with a camera back on her birthday, she took her second “first steps” on the beach, in the buff.

I have the video and all the pictures you could want of that precious moment. But, (and really, isn’t this the biggest irony in a blogging mom’s life?) she’s not wearing anything other than a large amount of sand mixed with cookie crumbs and the cutest too-big baseball cap you could imagine.

And no, you can’t see the photos. Or the video footage, which is, if I may say so, adorable. Because, you know, I draw the line at not showing my kids in the buff online.

Standing… just not walking.

Milestone Photos: First Birthdays

In a mere four weeks C will be turning 6. We have big plans for a low key, semi-sleepover party complete with painted nails, popcorn, pizza, and movie watching.

It’s going to be a blast and yet, I’m nostalgic for that first birthday party. The one in the park, with the wind so strong that we couldn’t keep the balloons from flying away.

I planned that party for months. Every little detail was perfect – invitations, cake, even the snacks. I had visions of the perfect party – one that C would enjoy and relive forever through pictures.

She cried. Most of the time.

She was overwhelmed by the people and the bustle. As for the cake I lovingly baked, she wanted nothing to do with it. In fact, it made her cry all over again.

I treasure those photos for a whole other reason than I expected I would. Instead of capturing the perfect moment, they remind me that as a parent we can hope and wish for the outcome we want the most, but in the end, nothing ever turns out quite how we planned.

When I’m tempted to forget about letting go, I remember that sweet little face, twisted in anguish over the commotion and hateful cake, and I remember that as a parent, I can always guide my kids in the right direction, but they are not me, and I have to respect and remember who they truly are.
