Milestone Photos: First Steps

standard June 13, 2011 Leave a response

I have a confession to make. I missed my second daughter’s first steps.

I was in the house with her. It was a sunny weekend afternoon. I fact, I was very focused on her seeing as I was running around making cupcakes and doing last second prep for her first birthday party. But I wasn’t actually focused on her.

If we’re being brutally honest, when she took that momentous first step, while frosting said cupcakes, I was on the phone with a really old friend who I hadn’t talked to in years and who clearly really needed to talk. So, when M called to me from the living room, I might have said something like:

“Yeah, yeah. Great. I’ll catch her next first steps.” Cruel mommy that I am!

But come on, we all know how it is. Kids do something for the “first” time, then they don’t do it again for weeks and they do it all over again.

Little L, true to form, didn’t take any more “first steps” until we went to Lake Tahoe with the family a few weeks later.

That time, as though to prove the point that I should really have put down the phone and run over with a camera back on her birthday, she took her second “first steps” on the beach, in the buff.

I have the video and all the pictures you could want of that precious moment. But, (and really, isn’t this the biggest irony in a blogging mom’s life?) she’s not wearing anything other than a large amount of sand mixed with cookie crumbs and the cutest too-big baseball cap you could imagine.

And no, you can’t see the photos. Or the video footage, which is, if I may say so, adorable. Because, you know, I draw the line at not showing my kids in the buff online.

Standing… just not walking.

Milestone Photos: First Tooth

standard May 25, 2011 Leave a response

I discovered Little L’s first tooth in a rather unfortunate event that involved a very sensitive part of my anatomy. She found my reaction hilarious and after that repeated her new trick at every feeding.

Go figure, I was in no hurry to run to get my camera to capture the sharp little thing on film.

It’s possible that I also wasn’t exactly motivated because I remembered from my time with the first kid just how hard it is to actually get a picture of that first tooth. Maybe I thought it would be easier to let her gnaw on me and then get a plaster cast of the dents…

When C’s first tooth had broken through I tried endlessly to get a photo of the little incisor. I tried to make her laugh, to make her open wide. I tried to sneak the camera near her mouth. I even tried to get her to lie upside down on the living room ottoman. But that tooth, the one she was so happy to show anyone who asked, was never in sight of my camera’s view finder.

I’ve always thought that I’d failed at getting that precious shot, then, tonight while looking through some old pictures on my computer, I found this:

If you blow up the picture and squint a little you can barely see it there, nestled in the middle of her lower gum, my first baby’s first tooth… the one that, 6 years later, is so wiggly and about to fall out.

Milestone Photos: First Birthdays

standard April 14, 2011 Leave a response

In a mere four weeks C will be turning 6. We have big plans for a low key, semi-sleepover party complete with painted nails, popcorn, pizza, and movie watching.

It’s going to be a blast and yet, I’m nostalgic for that first birthday party. The one in the park, with the wind so strong that we couldn’t keep the balloons from flying away.

I planned that party for months. Every little detail was perfect – invitations, cake, even the snacks. I had visions of the perfect party – one that C would enjoy and relive forever through pictures.

She cried. Most of the time.

She was overwhelmed by the people and the bustle. As for the cake I lovingly baked, she wanted nothing to do with it. In fact, it made her cry all over again.

I treasure those photos for a whole other reason than I expected I would. Instead of capturing the perfect moment, they remind me that as a parent we can hope and wish for the outcome we want the most, but in the end, nothing ever turns out quite how we planned.

When I’m tempted to forget about letting go, I remember that sweet little face, twisted in anguish over the commotion and hateful cake, and I remember that as a parent, I can always guide my kids in the right direction, but they are not me, and I have to respect and remember who they truly are.

Milestone Photos: Crawling

standard March 9, 2011 4 responses

Now that the girls are getting bigger there are fewer milestones to document. Beyond first days of school there’s not much along that vein that grabs my camera’s attention.

Luckily my camera was always at the ready back when there were weekly (if not daily milestones.) Of course, since I wasn’t sleeping much back then, now when I flip back through the photo-folders on my computer it’s like I’m reliving it all over again.

Take, for instance, this photo series depicting C “teaching” Little L to crawl.

One arm in front…
That’s right! Good job!
Where did she go? I don’t know what’s next!
Yeah. That wasn’t right. Now I’m stuck…
Thanks man.
That’s better! Now we’re really moving!
You left me again?!?

Four years later and I’m still cracking up.

Eventually Little L figured out how to move on her own. Probably a mere day or two later and C moved on to teaching her other things. These days she’s coaching her on the monkey bars and when I’m not looking I suspect that she’s teaching her the fine art of burping on command.
