To cut or not to cut? That is the question

standard May 21, 2008 15 responses

Pregnancy does amazing things to hair. Lush, full, shiny… gorgeous. Mommyhood? Not so much. My long hair is lank and drab. It’s thin because it keeps falling out and it’s driving me crazy. It looks good for about ten minutes after I get ready in the morning and after that I cringe whenever I see myself in the mirror.

Do you ever do that? Think you look pretty good and then catch a glimpse of yourself and jump? Yeah. Hate it.

Anyway. I think I’m done with the hair. Right now it’s long, really long, almost below my shoulder blades. It’s wavy and parted down the side. No matter how short or long it is somehow it always looks exactly the same. So I want to do something a little drastic, I’m thinking auburn low lights hair just below my shoulders… and… bangs. But I’m a wuss and I’m scared to do this without the opinions of the Internets.

What do you think? How would I look with this cut?
I’ve already posted this picture of me with the girls, but I’m reposting it so you can compare the two.
So? Tell me honestly? Do I do it? Should I get the fringe?

  • Cut, Cut, Cut!! The longer one’s hair is, the less it frames the face and the older one looks.

With a hairstyle, you gain life back into your face. I had hair like yours, wavy and long with no bangs, just back in September. I now have hair that frames my face. And I look like 10 years younger….(my humble opinion 😉

So cut!! 🙂 If you need a good hairstylist, let me know!

  • I’m with Smiling Mom – cut!
    🙂

  • no hairstyle is undoable.

you can always grow the bangs out if you don’t like them

  • What an adorable picture. Getting a haircut definitely feels great. Bangs is a big move though… they take a LONG time to grow out. But you’ll look great with them.

  • GET THOSE BANGS!! Just make sure you get them cut so you don’t hide your eyes and I think it would totally great…and bangs are making a comeback! Good luck with the decision!

  • DO NOT – I repeat – DO NOT get fringe with curly hair! Not unless you have a major love/love relationship with your blowdryer/flatiron. Trust me. Been there. Not a good look. Cut, yes, I think you’ll look mucho fantastico. Fringe? WAY to much maintenence for a fellow curly-haired chicka. Honest, I have the same hair as you (from what I can see). A dab of Frizz-Ease, then take a handful of hair from right above your forehead, brush it straight down over your eyes, and then pull it over and pin it behind one ear. Insta faux-sideswept bangs. Curls+Fringe=Regret.

Best of luck with your decision – post “after” pics!

    [Love your blog, BTW. :)]

  • well, bangs would be cute… but very high maintenance. so just think about how much time it’ll consume every morning just blowdrying it to the way to you want it. if you feel that you can totally do that then go for it. change is always good.

i’m actually thinking about getting a bob. i’m sick of my hair too… however, no bangs for me. i’m too lazy. 🙂

    good luck!

  • mah-meeee is right – bangs are high maintenance but if you are willing to spend the time on it, I think they are SO worth it. My hair was all one-length before and I went and got it highlighted and cut with bangs and layers. I now take my showers at night so that in the morning I only have to straighten and/or curl. I’ve had many compliments about the change but it’s a lot more work than I’m used to.

I usually get a short cut when my kids are small to keep it low maintenance but I guess I’m having a pre-midlife crisis because I’m determined to keep my hair long right now, no matter how annoying or high maintenance it is!

  • I like it. I have been toying with getting some bangs and a new style myself…

    Good luck.

  • I think a short cut would look good on you. And it would be cooler for the summer. However, I agree with the commenter who mentioned the frustrations of having bangs (a.k.a. a fringe) when you have curly hair. I fight with my bangs all the time. Even Frizz-Eaz doesn’t help. Ask the hairdresser what he/she recommends as an easy short style.

  • I went from waist-length hair to chin-length hair. Go for it! 🙂

  • I say get it cut too. I did and it felt so much better!!

  • Do it! The fringe is CUUUUUTE!! 😀

  • I like the fringe but you will have to put more work into your hair. I’m struggling with getting bangs myself. I started to get them last hair cut but decided against it once I was in that chair. I think I’m going for it next time though!
