“Do you know what your last day is going to be?”
“No, not yet. It depends on when the right person is hired to cover for me.”
“Hey! We should have the same last day!”
“Why? When’s yours?”
“The last Friday in June!”
“Yeah. I was really hoping to be done long before then.”
“Oh. See? I really don’t see how there’s any way that’s going to happen.”

And the sad thing? I’m starting to doubt too. I gave four weeks notice three weeks ago, but I agreed to stay as long as it took to find the right person. And therein lies the rub. The right person has yet to be found. Key decision makers keep popping out of the office for conferences and family trips. And the days tick on by. I’d started thinking that I might be done by the middle of June, now I’m not so sure.

And that my friends? That just blows.

  • I hope you don’t mind me delurking to say…just do it. Give them a date and get the heck out on that date. You have been beyond nice. I know all that don’t want to burn your bridges etc, but take it from someone who’s worked in a lot of offices, they won’t get around to doing anything until they know you’re serious and really leaving on a certain date! I can’t wait to see you get on with all the brilliant things you will write. Love your blog BTW

  • I agree, it would be very hard for you to make plans when you haven’t got any kind of end date in sight with work. You never know how serious they’re taking finding a replacement for you.. good luck!
