The data was all retrieved and put on not one, but two DVDs. The hard-drive arrived this morning and Little L and I will be picking it up on our way to go get C from daycare. Now that I know that hard-drives can just die I’ll be much more careful about backing up my pictures and my documents. I’ll upload all pictures to an online service and I’ll email all word documents to myself. This has been a real wake-up call; I’ll definitely be more careful in the future.
And, you! Yes, you! Back it up! If you have even ONE document that you would be heartbroken to lose, BACK IT UP. Email it to yourself! Put it on a flash drive! Put it on an external hard-drive! Just do it! Hard-drives do “just die.” Consider this your own personal public service announcement.
Now I’m getting off my soapbox and I’m going to go get my laptop. This novel ain’t gonna write itself you know! (Dude… Blogger doesn’t recognize blog as a word, but thinks ain’t is one? Weird…)
Edited to add: Oops… hangs head in shame… I caused the crash. When I asked the computer guy if there was anything I could do to avoid a similar crash in the future he kind of shrugged and said no. Then he said “whatever you do, never turn the computer off by pressing the power button down. That’ll destroy any hard-drive, fast.” Guilty as charged. No one ever told me that it was disastrous to do just that. Now I know. Now you know. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
