My arm tightens slightly around C’s slim body. I hug her a little closer and I lean in towards her neck. Her sweet smell hits me and I take a deep breath in. She smells like sunscreen and baby sweat, like sunshine and laughter and it fills me with a deep sense of well being.
I place my mouth close to her ear and I murmur “I love you. Shhh don’t tell anyone; it’s a secret.” She giggles and leans in closer to me so that she can deposit one of her tender kisses on my cheek. “I love you too, mamy. I love you too much.” She lets me hold her tight for just another moment before she struggles to be put down. As I watch her run off my heart wells with love and longing. She’s my sweet baby, all kisses and cuddles.
A few days later I sit across the room, watching C and her daddy cuddle as they devour some bedtime books on the couch. I grin as I see her lean in close to his face and cup her hands around his ear.
“I have a secret!” She chirps and drops her voice to a whisper “pssst psst pssst…“
M turns to her and smiles. He leans in and whispers back “psst psst psst….” She giggles delightedly, throws her arms around his neck and hugs him. I laugh along with her.
I’ve started a trend. Instead of screaming our love for each other from the rooftop we’ll whisper it to each other as though it’s the best kept secret of all time. As though anyone glancing our way can’t tell how much the three of us are in love with each other.
