In the news…

standard April 9, 2007 Leave a response

Years ago I used to start the day by listening to the news. By the time I headed out to school I knew everything that had happened around the world overnight. I knew all about the current politics. I knew about the natural and unnatural disasters. Every morning I started my day by listening to tragedy. Then one day the radio didn’t work and the day after I forgot to turn it on. By the end of the week I was disconnected from the realities of the world and my outlook had greatly improved. What’s more, the world didn’t stop turning because I didn’t know about a school bus that had turned over or an earthquake on the other side of the world.
Nowadays I never watch televised news and I rarely read the paper. I figure that M will tell me about anything that I should know about. And in all seriousness, if anything really important happens, it’s usually reflected in the funnies or in the blogs I read, enough to raise my interest at least. Instead of starting the day reading about death, destruction, heartbreak, lies or treachery, I get to start the day by chatting with my daughter, watching Sesame Street and reading some of my favorite blogs. I don’t live in a bubble, I’m surrounded with people in the know, people who tell me what’s key and spare me what’s not. I just choose to not waste precious energy worrying or crying over things I can’t control. It might seem a little selfish or even superficial of me, but it’s a choice I’ve made to make my days more bearable and I stand by my choice.
If you do read or watch the news every day, how do you manage to shield yourself from the worry and angst that comes with the package?
