As we stood in the ice cream aisle debating whether No Sugar Added chocolate was better than no chocolate at all, a young lady came up beside us with her young daughter. She stood next to us and seemed as distraught by the lack of flavor options as us. C on the other hand, instantly forgot the ice cream situation and focused on the baby. She even showed off her hopping skills. The baby wasn’t so impressed.
We convinced the young mom to go with the Dreyer’s Slow Churned (because, seriously, it’s good stuff) and then we continued our own flavor debate. C stayed focused on the baby and chatter up the mom. As I leaned into the freezer to pull out the NSA chocolate (apparently any chocolate is better than none) I heard the young woman say to C “Oh, your mommy is having a baby too?”
I turned around in time to hear C say “I bea big seesta soon!”
“Did she really tell you that I was having a baby?” I asked the lady incredulously.
“Yes! When are you due?” she responded.
Our conversation lasted another minute and then we all left clutching our respective frozen deserts.
“She gets it! She really gets it!” I said to M as we walked to the cash register, relief flooding me.
C understands that it’s not a doll we’ll be bringing home in August, and she seems pretty excited about the prospect. Strangely enough, just knowing that is making everything else easier.
