Today was one of those perfect warm sunny winter days. We’ve been shivering for days and the sun felt good on our skins. It was the ideal park day. But instead of taking advantage of it C went to an indoor birthday party and M and I went to a memorial service.
Last Monday we were at the park. It was a lovely day, but not as nice as today. We were there with two friends, enjoying the time outside. My cell phone chirped and the number for one of the rabbis that I work with popped up. Intrigued I picked up. A few shocked minutes later I hung up.
M’s old boss, his mentor, the one who had him clerk all through law school and taught him everything, M’s friend was dead. He was vacationing in Peru with his family, complained of a headache and collapsed. In ten days he and his wife would have celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. In four months he would have have had a 63rd birthday party. In the fall his only daughter leaves for college.
David was a wonderful person. A little hard to deal with sometimes, but a great human being. He was kind, loving, and generous. If he liked you he was your most supportive fan. If he loved you he was always there for you. The world lost a good man last weekend. He will be missed by many.
