The future of my blog?

standard August 3, 2006 1 response

The wonderful Miss Zoot has raised some interesting questions about blogs. Although the questions were geared towards bloggers with slightly older children, they did make me think a little about my blogging future. If I’m really serious about this, as I mentioned here at SV Moms Blog, then these are things I should think of.

Check it out:

1. Do your kids know about your blog? If they’re too young to know, do you plan to keep it open to them as they get older?

My baby is only one and until Miss Zoot posted these questions I never even considered the future of my blog in relation to her. I write because I love to write. I don’t want to stop or censor myself. My husband does not read my blog because, as he says, he respects my privacy. I don’t plan to keep my kids from reading my blog, but at the same time I won’t bring it up unless they do!

2a. If so – do you worry they may get embarrassed later? What would you do if they asked you to stop writing about them? What would you do if they wanted you to take it down all together?

Wow, that’s a bridge I don’t plan on crossing until we get to it! lol Assuming that she isn’t a horrible bratty teen I would most likely honor her request to be featured in the blog any more, but I would not honor a request to take down the blog. I don’t believe that our children should be allowed to censor us.

2b. If not, what are you doing to make sure they never find it? What if they do find it?

3. Do you think our kids will appreciate the archive of their childhood? Do you wish your parents had done the same?

I think that eventually (post teen years, lol!) our kids will appreciate this bloggy archive. I know that I would love to know more about my childhood. A story that is told years later has been changed with time. Getting something straight from the horse’s mouth would truly be priceless.

4. Do you go back and re-read your past parenting milestones? Do you realize you forgot a lot?

I’ve gone back when I’ve looked for something I wanted to link to. It’s amazing how much I have forgotten. So much of the angst and stress of the first few weeks has lost it’s edge. I think that looking at my archives will be very helpful when I am expecting my second child.

5. What about your children’s friends/teachers/moms-of-friends? What if they found your blog? Do you tell your child not to tell anyone about it or are they free to talk about it? Do you worry their teachers or other parents will think it’s weird?

I live in Silicon Valley, I think it’s weird when someone doesn’t blog, lol. I talk about my blog, and I don’t see why my kids couldn’t if they really wanted to.
